The Human Brain and Uncertainty

SUMMARY AND FULL TEXT

SUMMARY

Today’s topic: THE HUMAN BRAIN AND UNCERTAINTY

Is it possible to embrace uncertainty?… and be at peace with “NOT KNOWING”?

The true nature of life is uncertainty.

And as human beings, we have a brain that is designed to protect us and tries to anticipate and predict what may happen in the future.

So, on the one hand, we have a thinking mind that is always trying to embrace certainty, and on the other, we have the fabric of life, which is pure uncertainty.

The thinking mind is a very useful instrument, but when it deals with a situation of uncertainty, all it will do is exhaust us.

The reality is that no matter how much you try to anticipate the future, you will never be able to create a definitive map.

When we believe that our safety depends on knowing what is going to happen, and we cannot know, uneasiness takes over and we activate survival mode.

Therefore, recognizing that the nature of life is uncertain is essential if we want to be at peace.

The thinking mind finds this very difficult to accept, but once we become aware of it, it becomes obvious.

No matter how much we try to anticipate and resolve the future, it is impossible to obtain the answers the brain needs in order to feel at peace.

Finally, remember that the thinking mind analyzes and tries to anticipate the future within the world of probabilities, while from the perspective of Being, there is only a magical world of infinite possibilities.

Which world would you rather live in?

FULL TEXT

Is it possible to be in harmony with uncertainty?
How can we be at peace with “NOT KNOWING”?
Is it possible to embrace the present without worrying about the future?

We have all heard about different techniques for making life easier to navigate.
“Positive thinking” is probably the most widely used strategy.

In the modern world, “positive thinking” techniques have replaced old religious beliefs.
But it is not a matter of indoctrinating ourselves with new beliefs about what we should or should not believe.
Perhaps it is simply a matter of becoming aware of reality as it is.

Is it possible to connect with our inner wisdom without becoming trapped in assumptions or superstitions?

When we become truly aware of something, mental strategies are no longer necessary.

The true nature of life is uncertainty. And alongside that uncertainty, as human beings, we have a brain designed to protect us, constantly trying to anticipate and predict what may happen.

In fact, our brain only knows how to live in the past and the future.
It is always trying to figure out what is going to happen, and sometimes it gets it right, but the underlying reality of life is uncertainty.

So, on the one hand, we have a thinking mind that is always trying to establish certainty, and on the other, we have the fabric of life itself, which is pure uncertainty.

You do not need to be an expert in biology to see the underlying conflict in a brain that tries to figure out and predict a future that is, by its very nature, uncertain.

When my son was four years old, he began to become aware of something new. I do not remember exactly what he said to me, but he began his sentence like this:

“Dad, I’m thinking with my thoughts…”

It was clear that, until then, his way of “thinking” had been different.

The thinking mind is a very useful instrument, but when it is faced with uncertainty, all it will do is exhaust us while creating frustration, anxiety, fear, worry, apprehension… which is how most people relate to their future.

The reality is that no matter how much you try to anticipate the future, you will never be able to create a definitive map.

So freedom, in this sense, means accepting the game we are part of—a game in which none of us truly knows what the hell is going to happen tomorrow. We can only imagine what is most likely to happen.

If we can come to terms with this, we will be much closer to experiencing the freedom we long for, instead of moving in the opposite direction, where we encounter anxiety and everything that comes with it.

When we believe that our safety depends on knowing what is going to happen, and we cannot know, uneasiness takes over and the nights become very long.

Therefore, recognizing that the nature of life is uncertain, in every moment, is essential if we want to be at peace and maintain a state of well-being.

With this awareness, the brain can continue doing its primary job, which is to think, but it ceases to be the center of our lived reality, while fear and worry begin to dissipate.

The thinking mind finds this very difficult to accept, but once you see it, it becomes obvious.

As we settle into this new reality, a space of faith and trust that was previously unknown to us slowly begins to open.

Because no matter how much you try to anticipate and resolve your future, you are not going to obtain the answers your brain needs in order to feel at peace.

So, can I teach my brain to accept the fact that the future is unpredictable and that all I can do is the best I know how to do in each moment, within my limitations?

—

If I can take that position and accept whatever happens, I will find an immense sense of relief—the closest state to peace that my brain can experience.

—

To the question:

How can I know that things are going to be okay?

The answer is:

I DON’T KNOW.

—

This is difficult for many people to accept… not knowing whether we are going to be okay tomorrow.

—

The thinking mind analyzes and tries to anticipate the future within the world of probabilities.

While from the perspective of Being, there is only a magical world of infinite possibilities.

Which world would you rather live in?
